Dujiangyan Scenic Area is one of China’s most important historical and cultural landmarks, featuring an ancient irrigation system that has been in operation for over 2,000 years. Whether you’re interested in the engineering marvel, the scenic landscapes, or both, this guide offers four different routes to help you make the most of your visit. Depending on your time, energy, and interests, you can choose the best route to experience Dujiangyan at its fullest.
1. For Those Who Want to Focus Only on the Irrigation System
If you’re mainly interested in the Dujiangyan Irrigation System and prefer to avoid mountain trails, this is the best route for you. Start at the Main Entrance (Gate 1), where you’ll first enter Li Dui Park, the first famous garden in the region. From there, you can visit the following key attractions along the flat paths:
- Zhi Shui San Bao (The Three Treasures of Water Control)
- Yan Gong Avenue (堰功道)
- Fulong Temple (伏龙观)
- Baopingkou (宝瓶口)
- Feisha Weir (飞沙堰)
- Jingang Di (金刚堤) – A 1.3 km walk (or take a shuttle bus)
- Yuzui (鱼嘴) – After crossing the Anlan Suspension Bridge, you’ll begin the uphill hike.
This route focuses entirely on the irrigation system and its marvels, allowing you to explore the core sites without venturing into the mountains. If you’re short on time or prefer a more leisurely visit, this is the best option.
2. The Full Scenic Route (Most Comfortable Route)
For those who want to explore the entire scenic area but prefer a less strenuous path, the Qin Yan Lou Entrance (Gate 6) offers the best option. This route is highly recommended for families, especially those with children or elderly members. It’s a downhill route, making it easy for people of all ages to enjoy. The route includes:
- Qin Yan Lou (秦堰楼 Gate 6)
- Erwang Temple (二王庙)
- Songmao Ancient Path (松茂古道)
- Anlan Suspension Bridge (安澜索桥)
- Yuzui (鱼嘴)
- Feisha Weir (飞沙堰)
- Baopingkou (宝瓶口)
- Fulong Temple (伏龙观)
- Yan Gong Avenue (堰功道)

You will exit through the South Gate (Gate 1), which brings you to Nanqiao (South Bridge). This route usually takes around 2.5 hours and is great for those who want to see the best of Dujiangyan with minimal effort.
3. Entering Through Erwang Temple (Gate 4)
Some visitors prefer to visit Yulei Pavilion for a panoramic view of the city. This route begins at Gate 4, where you can take a funicular lift (40 RMB per person) up to Yulei Pavilion (玉垒阁), which offers a stunning view of Dujiangyan city. Afterward, you can either retrace your steps to Erwang Temple or take another path via Songmao Ancient Path to continue the journey. However, this route isn’t recommended if you want to see the irrigation system in its entirety, as it doesn’t offer a full view of the waterworks. The Qin Yan Lou (Gate 6) is a better option, providing a more complete and free experience.
4. The Circular Route (Full Scenic Exploration)
For those with more time and energy, the Circular Route is a comprehensive way to explore Dujiangyan from top to bottom. This route can start at either West Street (Gate 2) or Yulei Mountain (Gate 3). It includes:

- Xiguan (西关)
- Yulei Pass (玉垒关)
- Yulei Pavilion (玉垒阁) – optional

This circular route is about 4 hours long, so it’s not the best choice for families with young children or elderly visitors. However, if you have plenty of time and energy, this is the most comprehensive way to explore the entire scenic area.
Bonus Tip: After Your Visit
After you finish exploring Dujiangyan, take time to stroll around Wenmiao Street (文庙街) in the ancient city, visit Zhongshu Pavilion, or enjoy the Blue Tears light display at South Bridge (Nanqiao). Yantianwo Square is nearby and offers great views of the surrounding area. If you’re heading back to Chengdu, you can easily catch the high-speed train at Li Dui Park Station to return to the city.
